Laurel Matthew, the Plant Records Curator at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden had the honour of becoming our first community presenter. You can view her presentation here and find the pdf attached at the end of this article. The result of the poll is shared below.
To inspire more participation we do not share recordings of the discussions unless otherwise stated, but Laurel have posted her questions in the forum (links further down in this article) and she would surely appreciate your input there.
Coffee Chat July 13th
A special thank you to all of you that attended our very first Coffee Chat. It may be impossible to create a forum that is alluding the great Coffeehouses of the Enlightenment (see below) in a 45 minutes Zoom-meeting, but those factors considered - and some technical difficulties aside - we had a lovely session with participants from 15 different institutions representing a varied level of IrisBG experience. Why is it called a Coffee Chat?My inspiration for these comes from the English Coffeehouse culture during the Enlightenment. Just like the Coffeehouses once offered an alternate sphere to meet and discuss “matters of mutual concern” we would like to create a similar arena for you, our community, to meet and discuss smart ways to utilise IrisBG and to find clever solutions to problems that arise in the daily work with your collection. What would you do?
- How much time & energy would you spend tracking down missing info (plant sources, planting dates, etc.) from the donor?
Forum: How much detective work on missing information? - What app or tools would you use to conduct a field inspection as efficiently as possible?
Forum: Field inspections - what tools do you use? - a) What year would you use for your acc. # -the year the collection was gifted orthe year in its original record?
b) What if there is no year recorded?
Forum: Accession # for gifted material/material with no year recorded? - What do you think the best field is for the breeding group? Or other group (i.e. flower form/plant growth groups for roses, daffodils, etc.)? Any issue with the way the names display?

We are looking forward to follow Laurel and Lewis Ginter in their ongoing process of including the fantastic gift from the siblings into the Lewis Ginter Collections.
